Stretching along the historic Grand Trunk Road from Bally to Panchpara, Howrah was once known as the “Sheffield of the East”—a thriving hub of jute mills and industry. Today, this legacy stands overshadowed by closed factories, unstable livelihoods, and deepening poverty.
The collapse of industrial activity has left thousands of unskilled workers without secure employment. At the same time, landless farmers and wage labourers continue to migrate into Howrah’s slums and squatter settlements in search of survival, placing immense strain on already vulnerable communities.
Human development indicators across the region reveal a harsh reality—limited access to education, skills, healthcare, and dignified livelihoods.
Howrah Central Supravat works to reverse this decline—empowering communities through education, skill training, and livelihood initiatives, and restoring dignity, opportunity, and hope where it is needed most.
